Explore Kawagoe, where the history of the Edo period and early modern times remains

Located about 50km north of Tokyo, Kawagoe was home to an important castle that protected Edo (the former name of Tokyo) and had close ties with the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Ruled by an important feudal lord, Kawagoe is home to old castles and many historic shrines and temples, as well as many buildings from about 100 years ago that marked the start of modernization, making it an important city for learning about early modern and modern Japan.

ITINERARY

*Meet at your hotel lobby, *Kitain temple, it has a history of over 1,200 years, and has maintained close ties with the Tokugawa Shogunate since the Tokugawa Shogunate was established in Edo about 400 years ago. We can see historically important buildings, including those relocated from Edo Castle. *Main street is known for warehouse-style buildings. This streetscape was developed following a major fire about 130 years ago, and still retains the scenery on the way to modernization. *We can visit former Kawagoe castle main building where rare building remaining original style. *Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is the oldest shrine in the area. You can enjoy unique scenery such as a large red torii gate and a tunnel of votive tablets. In addition, a row of cherry blossom can be watched on the bank of the stream behind the shrine in spring. *Back to your hotel
